Triggers and Case Examples

Here are some more DP triggers and case examples from people who have had DP themselves:

My depersonalization experience feels like I am from another planet, that I am complete removed from this world. For the past three years, I have had a total of five seizures. I am not sure if this is the cause but it seems to have started along with my symptoms of depersonalization. My history of coming from an abusive household might probably contribute too.

I have had really low blood pressure, something around 90/50 around the time that I experienced my first depersonalization episode. When I rise from lying down and when I stay in a cross legged position for too long, my hands and feet would get numb. My very first depersonalization attack occurred one day as I was walking home from school. I got extremely dizzy and I fell on the couch. I felt disconnected from all things and people. It was like I was watching their mouths move but I cannot grasp what they are saying. There was also this ringing in my ears and I feel like I am going to pass out. Sometimes I get this feeling during the night and I fear that I may pass out in my sleep and not make it alive. At night, I often get these weird twitching sensations. There are even instances when I look at my hand and my reflection in the mirror and they don’t really feel like my own.

It is very hard to describe depersonalization to someone who is not undergoing the same condition. Think of it as an extreme version of withdrawing into your own shell. You feel very disconnected emotionally. The closest I can get is that of feeling no grief when a loved one dies. There is a type of fog in the brain that keeps you from forming the chain of associations that you get with things and people. It’s like you understand that this person is your wife but your mind cannot make up the chain to set off that emotional signal. You know it logically but you still can’t feel anything. Something like that..
